Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Oversee and support the corporate accounting teams for the Retail Companies including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Non-traded REITs and 1940 Act funds
    • Review all SEC Filings (Form 10-K/10-Q/N-CSR) and the related GAAP/SEC checklists;
    • Review the management reports and related work papers that support the SEC filings;
    • Review all accounting position papers and work closely with the Accounting Policy group to ensure that all technical issues have been identified and addressed;
  • Oversee the financial planning and analysis/cash flow and dividend coverage model for NorthStar Healthcare Income;
  • Review packages for quarterly board meetings and related ad hoc analysis;
  • Oversee the implementation of new accounting standards and work closely with the Accounting Policy group to ensure a smooth transition;
  • Build key relationships with the internal Legal, Accounting Policy, Asset Management, Investment and Marketing teams;
  • Support/Assist the Internal Audit Team to ensure that process narratives reflect current procedures and that controls are implemented and executed;
  • Support/Assist the Asset Management and Investment teams as necessary;
  • Ad-hoc projects; and
  • Demonstrate leadership -- responsible for management and mentoring of 2-3 accounting managers/assistant controllers and their respective teams.


  • Bachelor’s degree (Accounting or Finance);
  • Excellent knowledge of US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations;
  • Strong technical accounting skills;
  • Solid research, analytical, quantitative and problem solving skills;
  • Highly proficient in reviewing financials statements and SEC documents, such as Forms 10-K, 10-Q;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to teamwork;
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels, functions and locations;
  • Desire to identify and implement process improvement opportunities;
  • Ability to properly manage and prioritize resources, people and projects with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Effectively work and communicate with members of the team to ensure established deadlines are being met in an efficient, accurate, thorough and neat manner; and
  • A self-starter who views the business through the eyes of an owner.
  • Working knowledge of MRI or Yardi (preferred, not required)
  • 10-15 years of experience in public accounting or a combination of public accounting and corporate accounting required.  Real estate experience required and Big 4 accounting preferred.
